Keep the pit running both shifts

Hour-based service for loaders, haul trucks and crushers in heavy dust.

An open-pit mine seen from above, its terraced benches forming the whorls of a giant fingerprint, with one haul truck climbing the spiral road.
Every pass on the haul road leaves wear you can measure.

A loader on two 10-hour shifts puts on 100 hours a week and reaches its 500-hour service in five weeks. Gytix counts each machine’s real hours, tightens filter intervals for dust, and opens the work order 50 hours before it is due.

Where pit hours turn into downtime

  • Dust beats the book

Air filters plug well before the book interval on a dry pit floor in July.

  • Faults lost at handoff

Night shift sees the warning light, and day shift never hears about it.

  • Tires without a record

Tires get replaced on looks, so nobody knows which haul road is eating them.

  • Crushers between pits

The mobile crusher moves from pit to pit, and its hours live on a clipboard in the cab.

How the first quarter runs

  1. Week 1

    Pit and plant walk

We list every loader, haul truck, dozer, crusher and screen, and collect the service records.

  2. Month 1

    Dust factors set

Your shop lead sets duty factors per machine, and pre-shift inspections go live on both shifts.

  3. Month 3

    Cost per hour visible

Filters, tires and services show as cost per hour per machine, ready for next year’s budget.

Dust, aftertreatment and tire hours

Dust and the interval. On a dry pit floor, intake air filters load far faster than the book interval assumes, and fine dust works into DEF fill caps and hydraulic breathers. A duty factor set by your shop lead brings air filter, oil and breather services forward for the machines at the face and the crusher feed, while the plant loader on paved ground keeps the standard plan. Check every change against the manufacturer’s manual. On two-shift machines, the shop can widen the work order window from 50 to 100 hours so parts arrive in time.

Aftertreatment in the pit. The EPA adopted Tier 4 emission standards for nonroad diesel engines in 2004, phased in from 2008 to 2015, so loaders and haul trucks built since then carry aftertreatment: a DPF, a DEF system or both. Short cycles at the crusher feed and long idles at shift change interrupt regeneration. Gytix logs aftertreatment fault codes per machine, so the shop sees the pattern before a derate stops a truck on the haul road.

Tires by the hour. Tire cost per hour is the price of a set divided by the hours it lasted. In a worked example with round numbers, a $24,000 set of loader tires that lasts 4,000 hours costs $6 an hour; the same set lasting 2,500 hours on a rough haul road costs $9.60. Logging each tire change against the hour meter shows which machines and roads wear tires fastest, and gives the grader operator a reason to blade the haul road. The PM interval planner shows how a dust factor moves the next four services.

Pit and quarry questions, answered

How does mining fleet maintenance software handle two-shift operations?

It counts engine hours, not days. A loader running two 10-hour shifts reaches its service interval twice as fast as one on day shift alone, and the work order opens ahead of it either way. Faults raised on night shift stay on the machine’s record, so the day shift lead sees them at handover.

Can service intervals be shortened for dusty pits?

Yes. Your shop lead sets a duty factor per machine or per pit, and air filter, oil and breather services come forward to match. Check every change against the manufacturer’s manual: a duty factor only tightens a schedule, it never stretches one. Machines on paved ground keep the standard intervals.

Does Gytix track mobile crushers and screens?

Yes. A mobile crusher or screen plant with an engine controller takes an A1 gateway, bought once and owned outright, which reads run hours, fuel and fault codes. It shows on the same map as the loaders and haul trucks, so the shop knows which pit it is in before sending the service truck out.

Can we track tire costs per machine?

Yes. Each tire change is logged as a work order against the machine’s hour meter, with the tire cost from parts and inventory. After a few changes, the Shop plan shows tire cost per hour by machine and by pit, which points to the haul roads and loading faces wearing tires fastest.

How is mining fleet maintenance software priced?

Maintenance is in the Shop plan, priced per connected machine per month, month to month, with unlimited users so every mechanic and operator can log in. It includes preventive maintenance, work orders, fault codes, asset health, parts, warranty tracking and owning and operating cost per hour.
